Sense of Humor
Most men rank sense of humor in the top three things they look for, but I think sense of humor is only part of what they’re trying to describe. I think they are really looking for a woman who they connect with through humor, a woman who makes life fun. A woman who loves to laugh is a woman who does not take life too seriously. We’ve all heard that laughter is the best medicine, but I believe that it’s essential for a happy marriage. A fun relationship, full of laughter and joy will fare much better through hard times than one without. Find a spouse who helps you enjoy life, someone who you can’t help but laugh with when you’re together.
People Watching
I take every chance I can to watch successful marriages. I think we all pay attention to
couples who are still wrapped up in each other after 40 years of marriage; especially when it seems like a happy marriage is a rare and mysterious thing today. Watching my mom and dad, I learned how important this is for a happy and exciting relationship. They had a wonderful marriage and I always wondered how they still had so much fun together after so many years. Part of the answer was that they simply enjoyed each other so much. They loved one another’s humor and they were silly and playful together. They shared something with each other that they shared with no one else. I think this type of light-heartedness, laughter, and joy is vitally important to a marriage. When looking for a wife, a guy has to find a girl who loves to laugh with him.
“Inside Stuff”
You can tell when a couple has this type of connection, because they can make each other laugh without a single word, just by looking in each other’s eyes. Many times, there’s something special that produced this inside joke. These moments come from their shared experiences, secrets revealed to each other, and the chemistry of their types of humor. Maybe they have shared funny experiences, or found goofy quirks in each other, or revealed their most embarrassing stories – and they love these things about each other. These inside jokes, stories, and memories add up over time, they make up what I call “inside stuff.” Some of these things no one else knows about, but that’s why those moments feel special and exciting.
Experience
In high school, I underestimated the importance of this factor. I dated a girl who seemed perfect — she was passionate about her faith, beautiful, smart, energetic, trustworthy, and the list goes on! But after dating for two months, I felt like something was missing and I realized that this was it. We didn’t have enough laughter in our relationship. We did fun things together, but she didn’t make me laugh and I didn’t feel that chemistry between us. Even when it was just her and me, she was serious and reserved. Maybe our types of humor didn’t match up, but our relationship needed fun, excitement, and laughter. Even though she was a fantastic girl, I knew she wasn’t right for me because we couldn’t connect in that way. No matter what type of humor you enjoy, find someone who laughs with you. Look for a woman who loves to laugh and who will have fun with you, no matter what life brings your way.
