As the world looks in on Christianity today, they are looking for honesty and for sincerity. Too often, what they have found is hypocrisy in those who profess to be followers of Christ. As a new generation of bands hits the forefront in Christianity today, we are seeing a transparency that has never been seen before. MIKESCHAIR is one band who is definitely not afraid to openly discuss who they are, hoping that in their journey with the Lord, others may relate and come to know Him as well. MIKESCHAIR formed while they were students at Belmont University. The Lord has ...
As I began to consider this concept, I thought it would be fairly easy. After all, how many fathers are there in the world? There must be many that stand out. How much news has been reported in the last ten years? There must be great fathers among the reports. Soon after beginning my research, I realized this was going to be a difficult, if not impossible, task. There are fathers in the news alright. Recently there was Dr. Umaru Abdulmutallab, the father of Abdul Farouk Abdulmutallab, otherwise known as the "underpants bomber", or the "undergarments bomber", or something like that. He is ...
A few weeks ago, I took a silent retreat into the North Carolina wilderness to get alone with God and to allow him to speak to my heart. I took a copy of 1 cd on my ipod, Heaven and Earth which is Phil Wickham’s latest album that releases on November 17. God spoke to me in many ways through scripture but He allowed Phil’s music to bring me to a point of true worship. I sat down with Phil this morning to talk a little bit about who he is, his career and what inspires his songwriting abilities. History Q- Give ...
Our God is a God of redirection. The Bible says in Proverbs 16:3, “Commit your works to the Lord and your plans will be established.” Many of us have planned out our lives, striving to be one thing, only to learn later that God wanted us somewhere else. When we make that commitment to the Lord, we see how God redirects the paths of our lives, leading us to where He always intended for us to be. Jonny Diaz learned this lesson from the Lord and learned that sometimes, that redirection isn’t the easiest thing to accept, but once you ...
At the end of the 1997 season, Scott Brosius wondered where his career was going. He had just completed his worst season in Oakland and now, he was hearing the trade rumors and contemplating where he would be next. God opened a door, one that Scott could not have imagined being opened before that time, reviving his career and providing Scott with a new platform and a new audience. His faith would grow as the Lord moved in so many ways. Scott Brosius is now the head baseball coach at his alma mater. He is in our Men of God spotlight ...
As a preface to Church Music, it’s probably good to know that each member of the David Crowder Band gets a Programming credit in the liner notes. DCB has always dabbled in the electronic, usually with novelty blips and bleeps here and there, save for the Sunsets and Sushi EP, but [...]

Mimo 710 I’ll be honest I bought this on a whim, but it’s not the first time I’ve thought “Wow, I wish I had a small 8″ monitor that was all USB powered”. I actually attempted to build one from an automotive LCD screen, but trying to get 12 volts from 5 volt USB doesn’t work. Ok, [...]

“Intentionally inorganic” is the phrase Derek Webb uses to describe his latest effort, Stockholm Syndrome, and while his signature acoustic sound may have been replaced with electro-beats and computer-synthesized bells and whistles, the allure of Webb, with his bold, often shocking statements, is still firmly in place. In fact, its one shocking statement in particular that [...]

Former Mormon, Latayne C. Scott, recently published two new books: Latter-Day Cipher, A Novel (Moody Publishers) and The Mormon Mirage, 3rd Edition: A Former Member Looks at the Mormon Church Today (Zondervan). In each of these books Scott's passion to challenge Mormonism's teachings and expose its inconsistencies rings true. Her ten year history as a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), and her subsequent conversion to Christianity, are the initial focus of The Mormon Mirage...

More often than we'd like, to many of life's maladies we can only look on as flabbergasted spectators. However, the familiar adage ‘Good sailors are not made by calm seas' is very applicable in today's volatile and unpredictable economy, where it has never been more apparent just what or in whom our trust is really anchored. Thus, as others prosper, seemingly unaffected by the shadow of the believer's own stockpile of surmounting hardships, it is altogether quite natural to respond with ‘it's not fair.' Dr. Wayne Mack's new book ‘It's Not Fair! Finding Hope When Times Are Tough', coauthored with Deborah Howard, is, "designed to teach a proper, biblical theology, and ...throw off the ‘it's not fair' mentality."

If you're like me, every time you turn on the radio you notice all they play are the same eight songs over and over and over again. Its either Britney's new auto-tune-heavy "Womanizer", some version of auto-tuned rap over a generic and un-original beat, Taylor Swift singing about yet another completely unrealistic love story that makes girls melt and guys want to gag, Kanye West being ridiculously over the top, Zac Brown singing about fried chicken and blue jeans, or Fall Out Boy with the latest installment of their flavor of blasé hyper-produced alt-rock. All of this mediocre top 40 makes you wish there was still good music to he heard. I am going to make your wish come true.

I remember, as a sophomore, having this hilarious conversation with a friend about sex. It was one of those grey winter afternoons and we were parked outside of the Christian high school the both of us attended. Part of what made it funny was the fact we were both virgins so conversations like this were sort of an indirect testing ground for guys to ascertain if the thoughts fueled on by your raging hormones were either normal or an indication of incurable sexual deviancy. Being good Baptists, of course, our entire talk was framed within the context of our assumed marriages. “On my honeymoon I’m going to burry my head right between my wife’s breasts and go crazy,” my friend said cupping a set of imaginary double D’s that he jiggled slightly to enhance the realism. Then we broke out into a fit of laughter as he lowered his head and illustrated the “motor boat” technique recently made famous by Vince Vaughn in the film Wedding Crashers. I don’t know how the discussion started or anything beyond that moment, but I do know “doing the nasty” was not a subject you could talk about within the walls our school.

Young's intentions are good. He wants to introduce readers to a loving God who was willing to sacrifice his own Son to save us from our sins. But all heresies begin with misconstruing the nature of God. From Jehovah's Witnesses to Mormonism to even Islam, they all get it wrong when it comes to understanding the God of Scripture. Young joins their company. Part of the problem arises because his story is confused and inconsistent. I don't think he sets out to mislead, but he himself is misled, either by himself or others. He wants desperately to show us the God of love as found in Scripture (1 John 4:8), but he ignores the other side, the God of utter holiness (Isaiah 6:1-5) and, ultimately, the final Judge (Revelation 20:11-15). Any presentation of God that shows only one side of His nature is wrong. In an effort to counter a false view of God as only the judging avenger of wrath, we must not go the opposite direction and present Him only as a loving, indulgent parent who never judges sin. Both extremes are false in that they present an incomplete picture of God as He shows himself to us in Scripture. By emphasizing only one part of God’s nature, The Shack actually leads readers astray with regard to God’s attitude towards sin. Papa tells Mack, “I don’t need to punish people for sin. Sin is its own punishment, devouring from the inside. It’s not my purpose to punish it; it’s my joy to cure it.”

Jon Foreman is on a journey. Though he may not be actually walking great distances, he is on the road to self discovery and that road is not easily travelled. With this collection of hits from his popular "Seasons" EPs he's giving us a glimpse of that journey and a raw and honest look at the man himself. Taking a break from his "day job" fronting the hugely successful rock band Switchfoot, Jon released 4 six song EPs "Spring", "Summer", "Winter" and "Fall". With "Limbs And Branches" we get a collection of hits from each EP (with help from fans through Jon's website) and 2 new songs.

There's a new documentary that came out in theaters recently (Oct. 3) called Religulous ("religion" + "ridiculous"). Bill Maher stars as the film's "host," guiding viewers on an exploration of organized religion in our world today - offering plenty of his opinions along the way - and it was directed by Larry Charles, who also directed Borat ... so you probably already know enough to determine whether this documentary will be wildly, or simply mildly offensive to you.
